Let’s Talk About Stress: How to Manage Stress as a Female Entrepreneur Reading Time: 4 minutes

Do you find yourself pushing through your day trying to get the endless tasks ahead completed? Have you ever felt burnt out by the end of the day and left overwhelmed and stressed because you weren’t able to achieve what you had planned?

Some Stress is Normal

Welcome to pretty much everyone’s daily reality! Stress is a normal everyday occurrence for us all and it’s something that we are used to it’s just that sometimes, it gets to us. As we all know, some stress is even good for us – as the chemical reactions that take place whilst we feel stress pump our body with adrenaline, this drives us forward and focus on responding to tasks that need to be completed.

It’s when stress starts to affect us in a negative way that becomes the challenge, it has some not so good effects. When you become stressed, your body goes into a fight, flight or freeze mode.

  • For instance, if you have an anxiety attack – your natural reaction may be to fight. That’s why some people become aggressive when having an attack because it’s their mind and bodies way of coping with the attack.
  • If you are asked to do something out of your comfort zone like parachute out of a plane or stand up and speak to an audience (both of which I have done). Part of us what’s to flee that situation as our survival mode kicks in the flight mode.
  • Finally, if you are scared because you can hear a strange noise in the house you may go into freeze mode under your blanket and virtually stop breathing.

All of those scenarios have different outcomes, we can experience all three of those in one given time. We can go from freezing up to wanting to take flight to ending it with a fight. Every situation is going to be different and we experience this as entrepreneurs all the time.

Stress as an Entrepreneur

Being an entrepreneur is hard work. Well, it is for me. I feel like I am in a constant battle of all three of those stress modes.  I want to keep on fighting for my dream and fight for my beliefs and passions but then some days I want to flee; I just want to give up and quit the dream. Some days, I get so scared of what I will be faced with next and I freeze and I can’t seem to do anything productive in that state of mind.

Coping With Stress

But it’s how we cope with those moments in between the constant doing and constant learning and the constant pushing ourselves to be great achievers.  So what do we need to do? We need to look after ourselves. We need to stop and give ourselves time to breathe.

Self-Care

If you are a reader of this blog you will know that I have learnt the hard way about self-care. I didn’t look after myself through some really tough times, I just kept pushing through and digging deeper but I learnt via having breakdowns and I want to educate those around me that self-care is not selfish, it’s there in order to survive.

Lifestyle Changes

Over the past 6 years I quit smoking, quit coffee and alcohol, reduced my sugar intake by over 70%, practice mindfulness on a regular basis, I’m vegan and have never felt so good in my life. I no longer suffer from anxiety, I have reduced side effects of depression and I have lost tons of weight and my skin looks the best its done in a long time. I sleep better and I am able to focus more and have become more creative and productive. Generally in a much better headspace and everyone around me benefits; all because I put myself first and I continue to do so.

    Love this! You always hit the nail on the head with what women are going through. I think the pressure on us these days is insane and stress is a natural consequence. Personally, I let stress build up then have a huge screaming explosion and I feel better.
    I definitely need to adopt better self-care and time out to deal with that, which all of your lovely encouragement is helping with! So thank you!
