The Girls First Overseas Holiday: Gran Canaria 2016

Reading Time: 5 minutes

The wait was finally over and the time had come for the girls first overseas holiday. Thanks to my step dad and mum for the opportunity and for taking us. Despite the slight nervousness I had about the flight, it all worked out to be near enough perfect. Travelling with twin toddlers was always going to have it’s challenges, but the girls were amazing.

We decided on a self catering villa holiday; destination… Gran Canaria. Sun, sea, sand and general relaxation was the aim of this holiday. We wanted a villa with a pool and plenty of space for us all to enjoy our surroundings. The villa we chose did not disappointed in the slightest.

This holiday was all about taking everything in our stride, a very relaxed approach, no rushing around and no real need to leave the villa unless we had to get provisions or visit the beach. This wasn’t about excursions and being busy.

Our surroundings outside the villa didn’t really matter but I must say, we were blessed with a stunning view of the sea – which was pretty amazing. There really is something so calming about the sea isn’t there?

The area itself was a little run down here and there but again, not really bothered as it appears to be an up and coming area. There were plots of land that were “villa-less” but it was clear there are plans to develop. This wasn’t near the villa – just adjacent roads. The road that our villa was situated on, was a quiet one way road.

Arrival + The Villa

We had a welcome pack of food which was ordered by us, ideal so we didn’t have to go shopping the moment we arrived. Fruit, bread and rolls plus a few other essentials.

And as you do, we explored the villa once we dumped our luggage and made the mad dash for bedrooms to get unpacked. The villa was super impressive, split over three floors with an underground garage and utility area which was also big enough for more rooms – it was huge.

There was plenty of seating in the living room with a huge TV and access to WiFi. The dining area had a very large table and comfortable chairs – we ate outdoors mainly but this table proved ideal for the girls to eat snacks on and do colouring in, play with their Little Passports kits and sticker books.

The bedrooms were perfectly sized with loads of hanging space and drawers. The master bedroom had a walk-in wardrobe – it was that big, the girls and I put our clothes in there, ideal to keep it all central. The kitchen was spacious with everything you needed for the week including dishwasher, microwave, oven, fridge freezer and plenty of cupboards with more than enough crockery and kitchenware needed for 8 people.

Every morning without fail, we had a huge bag of freshly baked bread rolls delivered to our door. Each day they were different and generally two different types.

We spent a lot of time swimming and having fun in the pool and relaxing on the sun loungers. It was such a luxury to have a private pool and so much more less stressful for me with the girls. They loved jumping in and swimming about (aided of course).

The pool lights changed various colours which was beautiful at night.

The lighting around the garden was gorgeous and the palm trees as backdrops where stunning.

Once the girls were in bed, my pre dinner drink was a cider by the pool in the bar area or in the Jacuzzi! Pure and utter bliss for this single mama.

The weather was gorgeous the whole time we were there – pretty much in the late 30’s reaching 41 degrees most days. We of course made the most of Al Fresco dining every night – it would have been rude not to with the heat, soft breeze and stunning surroundings.

Beach Fun

We made it down to the local beach a couple of times which again, was lots of fun. Buckets and spades at the ready and we got stuck in making sand castles and having a good paddle in the sea.

Seeing the girls so excited by the sand and sea was such a delight! Although they have visited beaches – it was when they were very small.

We visited the dunes on one of the days but it was quite windy, so didn’t stay for long. All beach visits were followed by ice cream, a post beach must – YUM! We found one place which had really scrummy ice cream and lots of flavours and the owner/manager was so lovely, the girls got a lollipop each visit.

Coming home

We had such a wonderful holiday and they always go too fast don’t they? The flight back was a later flight which meant they could unwind. But we had been hanging around a fair bit due to vacating the villa at 10am and our flight wasn’t until 6pm. Such a long day for the girls but again, they did so well considering.

Self catering is so ideal as we get the best of both worlds; it’s always been a family favourite and made even better by staying in this gorgeous Villa.  I don’t usually miss places (that much) but I felt so at home here, it was a truly magnificent villa. Bring on the next adventure!
