A few years ago, there really wasn’t much around in the way fo vegan sweets but thankfully the rise has created a supply and demand for more vegan-friendly foods, as veganism becomes part of more and more lives. But despite being vegan, I still love to make things especially since becoming a mother to my twins. I love making simple and fun creations with them from slime to baking.
Whilst we were away on holiday and I had time to “relax”, I started to look more vegan creations and discovered Vegan Gummy Bears. So I purchased all the ingredients and moulds so we got to work.
To make the vegan gummy bears…
You will need:
Juice 240ml (the amount of juice depends on the agar you buy – use the directions on the agar)
Agar Flakes or Powder
Sugar – 1 tablespoon
I found the best kind of juice was thicker juice and not diluted with water. Pure apple, pineapple, orange juice. Also, the smoothie type juices are great too.
I had Agar flakes but you can buy agar powder. You will need to use the directions from the agar to work out how much juice you will need.
The silicone moulds and pipettes were purchased from Amazon, they came in a 3 pack with the pipettes.
How to make:
Pour the measured juice and sugar out into a pan and bring to the boil
Add the Agar flakes or powder – you might need to add a little more than suggested to ensure the consistency is created.
Simmer for 10-15 minutes
Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool for 2 minutes
Use the pipettes to fill the moulds
Refrigerate for 2-4 hours – longer if needed.
Take the gummy bears from the moulds and serve or store.
You can experiment with different moulds, juices and maybe add edible glitters. It’s a fun activity to do with children and also a healthier way to enjoy something sweet. You are in control of what goes into your candy.
